French Americans

French Americans are people with their origin from France who settled in the United States of America. French Americans are concentrated in locations that include but are not limited to California, Connecticut, Louisiana, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, New York, Minnesota, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Vermont, Washington and Wisconsin.

The history of French Americans can be traced from the seventeenth century, mainly when French Louisiana was claimed by the French and the French established colonies in different parts of this central region of United States. This territory was later sold of by Napoleon at the beginning of tj nineteenth century to the United States of America. This French Louisiana area was a wide region that covered nearly fifteen states of today’s United States of America.

The second incidence of French people coming to the United States was when a large number of French who originally settled in Canada migrated during the period of about hundred years that started in 1850 and ran through the first half of the twentieth century. The other wave of French came from the Republic of Haiti in the start of the nineteenth century. These immigrants settled with the Cajuns from Canada in modern-day Louisiana State. In the current situation, many French immigrants prefer to settle in the cities like Miami, Orlando and Tampa of the Florida State.

The French dialect spoken in Louisiana is either the Cajun French dialect or the Louisiana Creole French dialect. As the Cajun people are the descendents of the Acadians from Canada, their language that is the Cajun French dialect is also derived from the Acadian dialect. In some regions in and around New England one can find the Canadian French dialect spoken by the Francophones staying in this area. Nearly all Universities and colleges in the United States provide education in French language. It is also one of the highest preferred foreign languages to study by Americans. The French language taught in the academic institutions is only the Standard French dialect spoken in France. Therefore apart from other dialects speaking French Americans one can also find several Standard French speaking French Americans in the various parts of the United States.

The French Americans are either Roman Catholics or the Protestants. After the evolution of modern France, the Protestants were not accepted easily in French society, due to which many preferred to immigrate to places like United States to avoid discrimination. Therefore there are several Protestant French Americans whose ancestors had settled in the United States from the days of the French colonies.
