French Culture
The culture in France is thousands of years old and has seen several modifications along with the fall and rise of various dynasties. If we consider the early period when the region of modern France was united with adjacent territories and was called Gaul. During those days, the Celtic culture was predominant in France. However, this culture was modified by the Roman culture when Gaul fell to the Roman Legions. The culture was then of mixed type, that is, under Celtic-Roman influence. After the Romans were expelled from Gaul, the Franks further influenced the culture along with the language of France.
French literature
French literature came to existence during the eleventh century. It is said to be one of the first national literatures that was created in Europe. Early French literature spread to different parts of Europe. When this first form of literature was created, the French language had yet to be standardized, and the language in France in those days had different dialects corresponding to the various regions.
The fourteenth, sixteenth and seventeenth centuries were the times when French literature saw its most significant developments. For instance, during the sixteenth century, French literature became more artistic and romantic than before, while in the seventeenth century, it achieved a dominant position in Europe. In the eighteenth century, French became the highest language in Europe due to strengths in various fields, and the literature started influencing the literatures of other countries from Asia and America.
In modern days, French literature is based on subjects that includes but is not limited to: existentialism, naturalism, symbolism and surrealism. Its influence on the literatures from West to East still exists in modern times.
French music
The history of French music, much like French literature, is believed to have existed since the tenth century. The French music in those days mainly consisted of songs and poems related to the romance of the Knights.
In recent times the various types of music found in the France are: classical music, folk music, popular music, Rock, Hip-hop and Rai.
The classical form of French music can be further classified as: French opera and romantic classical music. The folk music of France is famous around the world. It has variations like: Western France folk music, Central France folk music, Bagpiper music, Basque folk music, Brittany folk music and Corsica folk music. These folk music types are today is generally a major attraction for the tourists visiting France.
