The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower, a 324 meter (including the antenna) tall iron structure in Paris, is one of the world famous masterpieces of French, and was architecture constructed in the year 1889. It is on a long green stretch of land besides the Seine River. The Eiffel Tower was designed by the engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel, after whom the tower is named.

It was the tallest tower in the world for about forty years after its construction was complete. The Eiffel Tower was erected for the World’s Fair in Paris that was held to celebrate the centennial of the French Revolution. Gustave Eiffel received permission from the local governing authorities to keep the tower for only twenty years, after which it was to be dismantled.

The Eiffel Tower required two years and two months to be completed. There were 18,000 plus pieces of steel and two and half million rivets used to make the tower. The Eiffel Tower was built with two lifts that were based on the mechanism of powered chains and rollers which went up only to the second floor. The third level could be reached by using the spiral staircase which was just 80 centimeters in width.

A team of over 300 skilled workers and hundreds of other laborers built this unique structure. In designing the structure, the help of Maurice Koechlin was of considerable importance. Being an open structure of frames, the tower was considered as a very dangerous piece of work. But due to the immense safety measures taken by Gustave Eiffel during the construction, there was no severe casualties caused before the completion of the Eiffel Tower.

The Eiffel Tower today is of significance for many reasons. Like the Eiffel Tower is used for Radio Transmission. It is used as an antenna by the Paris observatory to exchange wireless signals with some international observatories. Also the Eiffel Tower is used for several promotional campaigns and the revenue generated is used for maintaining the structure.

Apart from these facts, the Eiffel Tower has two restaurants”one at the first floor, which is at the altitude of 95 meters, and the other at the second floor, which is around 150 meters above the ground and is serviced by a newly built special lift. Tourists can climb up to the third floor of the Eiffel Tower conveniently with the new lifts installed within the structure. It is believed that hundreds of millions of tourists visit the Eiffel Tower, making it one of the most sought after destinations of the world.
